MasterCard’s QkR mobile payment system enters trial in Australia
Jan 27th

MasterCard is all over the map when it comes to mobile payments. The credit company will partner with anyone, anywhere, anytime if it means getting new customers and making a buck on the deal. Its latest offering is called QkR, an Australian effort with support from the Hoyts chain of movie theaters and Commonwealth Bank. The initial trial run will be at La Premiere cinemas, where customers will be able to order and pay for food and beverages right from their seat with the QkR app. To initiate the transaction a you scan the QR code or tap the NFC tag attached to the arm rest, and a staff member delivers the trough of popcorn and kiddie pool of coke right to your seat. Now all we need is this sort of high-end treatment in American movie theaters. Check out the video after the break to see it in action.

RIM, Telefonica announce NFC trial, aim to launch mobile wallet next year
Nov 25th

RIM’s NFC campaign is about to roll into Iberia, now that the BlackBerry manufacturer has announced a new partnership with Madrid-based Telefonica. This week, the two companies unveiled plans to begin testing a mobile payment and ID card system across the Spanish capital, in the hopes of launching commercial services next year. The so-called Telefonica Wallet for BlackBerry trial will involve some 350 Telefonica employees and a select group of testers within Madrid, each of whom will be able to make payments, access offices and check bank statements from their BlackBerry handsets. Telefonica’s Matthew Key told Reuters that his company chose RIM to participate in the trial primarily because of the security of its BlackBerry platform, stressing the importance of earning enough consumer trust to handle sensitive personal data. No specifics yet on when or where the carrier will launch a full payment system, though Key said that Telefonica’s aiming to bring it to a handful of markets in 2012.

FCC finds AT&T merger not in public interest, Genachowski issues order to hold trial
Nov 22nd

It’s no secret that the FCC has raised concerns over the proposed merger, and pushing this order forward understandably reflects that. In fact, during a conference call with media, the FCC expressed fears that the deal would violate antitrust standards and isn’t in the public interest, and the Commission cited records showing it would ultimately result in a loss of jobs, contrary to AT&T’s claims. Naturally, this means there’s one more hoop for the carrier to go through before it can hope to pick up T-Mobile, and it’s a biggie; with the FCC and DoJ holding steadfastly against the acquisition, the GSM carrier’s chances of success appear to be slimming significantly. Head past the break to see AT&T and Sprint’s reactions to the news.

Verizon Launches VZ Navigator Version X with Free 30 Day Trial
Jul 14th
I’ve never been impressed with Verizon’s proprietary VZ Navigator app. It constantly froze, directions were incorrect on many occasions, and it just didn’t have a good UI. That all changes today, as Big Red has announced VZ Navigator, Version X, which was previously only available to select Verizon Android devices in select cities. This new version brings tons of new and exciting features to Android devices on the nation’s largest carrier. Such features include, but are not limited to:
- Smart routes with real-time traffic updates every 60 seconds
- Voice turn-by-turn directions, even in the background while other apps are being used
- Real signs and road views
- Location sharing
- and much more
Now, after watching the promo video for this app, I can honestly say that for the first time since the Droid Incredible landed, I wish I was a Verizon customer, just to give this navigator a try. With that being said, Big Red wants you to give Navigator VX a shot for yourself. If you’re a Verizon customer, you can scan the QR code below and sign up for a FREE 30 day trial of Navigator VX. This trial period hold several purposes, but it’s essentially a beta, so that Verizon can get feedback from users on where they think the app needs improvement.
So what are you waiting for? Get to scanning, and let us know what you think of the app by leaving a comment below or on our Facebook Wall! Thanks to Colby for the tip!

LightSquared’s LTE breaks GPS in New Mexico trial, angers John Deere
Jun 2nd

With Best Buy, Cricket, and Leap already signed on as partners, LightSquared has a lot riding on the success of its nationwide LTE network. Unfortunately, the Airforce’s concerns about it interfering with GPS have been born by a test run in New Mexico. Officials in charge of the state’s 911 systems as well as trucker hat kings Deere & Co. reported loss of service up to 22 miles away from LightSquared’s cell tower. The company believes it has a solution to the interference problem, but hasn’t specified exactly what the fix might be. Now the 4G wholesaler’s future rests on a June 15th report to the FCC detailing the potential issues for both consumer navigators and the precision GPS systems used by the military and airlines — but when even John Deere is lobbying against you things start to look a little bleak.
