LG HX906TX home theater system promises 3D sound, enviable Super Bowl acoustics
Aug 30th

Looking to enhance the audio in your man (or lady) cave? Then you may want to check out LG’s new HX906TX 9.1 cinema sound system — a ten-speaker package claiming to deliver “truly 360-degree sound.” It’s designed to make you feel like you’re at the center of the audio (even if you’re really at the far end of the room smooshed between two people on the couch) — the way you might hear in a concert hall or really large bathroom with great acoustics. LG says it uses a DSP algorithm to pump audio vertically and horizontally using 3D reflectors, extending sound upwards and filling in the gaps. You’ll also get added features like Blu-ray playback, WiFi Direct and Smart TV connectivity to smartphones and tablets using an app, although there’s no word yet on pricing or availability. PR after the break.

Traktor Kontrol S2 digital DJ system shaves a few inches and bones off its big brother
Aug 25th

Look, last year’s Traktor Kontrol S4 was pretty damn awesome but, at ,000 and about the size of your average Williamsburg DJ, it wasn’t exactly for everyone. That’s where the S2 comes in. Instead of four channels, it’s a “2+1″ setup that supplements the two standard audio ones with a dedicated sample channel. You still get the same high-resolution jog wheels and integrated 24bit / 96kHz sound card, but Native Instruments managed to shave a few inches, pounds and bucks off its predecessor. At 9 it’s much more affordable — still not exactly an impulse purchase, but within the range of most serious hobbyists. Check out the gallery bellow as well as the video and the PR after the break.

Telex anti-censorship system promises to leap over firewalls without getting burned
Aug 14th
Human rights activists and free speech advocates have every reason to worry about the future of an open and uncensored internet, but researchers from the University of Michigan and the University of Waterloo have come up with a new tool that may help put their fears to rest. Their system, called Telex, proposes to circumvent government censors by using some clever cryptographic techniques. Unlike similar schemes, which typically require users to deploy secret IP addresses and encryption keys, Telex would only ask that they download a piece of software. With the program onboard, users in firewalled countries would then be able to visit blacklisted sites by establishing a decoy connection to any unblocked address. The software would automatically recognize this connection as a Telex request and tag it with a secret code visible only to participating ISPs, which could then divert these requests to banned sites. By essentially creating a proxy server without an IP address, the concept could make verboten connections more difficult to trace, but it would still rely upon the cooperation of many ISPs stationed outside the country in question — which could pose a significant obstacle to its realization. At this point, Telex is still in a proof-of-concept phase, but you can find out more in the full press release, after the break.Continue reading Telex anti-censorship system promises to leap over firewalls without getting burned

Motorola Photon 4G Receives Leaked SBF (System Boot File) – Brings Bricked Devices Back From The Grave
Aug 5th

If you’re a Photon 4G user and fancy yourself an Android modder you may be able to rest easy now that the “system boot file” for the device has been leaked onto XDA. This will essentially let users bring back to life hard bricked devices and give a gentle push to would be rooters now that they they have a way to jump start a bricked Photon. Here are the directions on how to apply from XDA:
http://www.multiupload.com/HPIO6K8XIK download and extract this file to somewhere you will not lose it…
to flash this you need rsdlite and drivers
64bit drivers…
Steps to flashing…1. DL and install RSDLite and Driver package from link above
2. Power down your phone
3. On your phone hold vol up and power till you see RSD at the top of the screen
4. Launch RSDLite from your program menu on your pc/laptop
5. Press the ". . ." button next to the box labeled "Filename"
6. Load up the SBF file you extracted from the MR download
7. Plug your device into your computer RSDLite should recognize your phone right away if you installed the drivers from this link i provided
8. Press the "Start" button
9. Be patient…takes a while…will reboot a couple times so grab a beverage of choice…use the restroom…take out the dogs…whatever…
10. may require activation again…mine did so be sure you have a means in which to do so…web…phone to call sprint for programming…OTA…
11. Enjoy and hit thanks!!!
Don’t bother attempting this process unless you know well what you are doing ahead of time but I think that goes without saying. I’m curious to know if this new SBF will help any of our readers make the jump into rooting their Photon 4G’s?

Insert Coin: YouTurn accelerometer-based turn signal system for cyclists
Jul 30th
In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you’d like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with “Insert Coin” as the subject line.

Many of us who bike in the city ride in constant fear of being tapped by a taxi cab, or crushed by a bus. There’s no way to completely eradicate the risk of being run over by a much larger motorized vehicle, but making yourself easily visible — both at night and during the day — can certainly make a difference. Smart cyclists use hand signals long before they need to make a turn, but the YouTurn signal system aims to make those indicators difficult for drivers to miss, with an accelerometer-based gadget that illuminates an arrow in the direction of your turn. If you want to turn left, for example, simply point your hand to the left, and the device will flash a giant yellow chevron. The prototype you’ll see in the video below is integrated with a glove, though the final version will simply attach to the back of your hand, and can be stored in a bag when you’re not on your bike. There’s no mention of durability or waterproofing, though since the inventor’s objective is to enhance safety, we imagine he’ll be taking precautions to avoid electrocution in the rain.
YouTurn inventory Jack O’Neal launched a Kickstarter page to help fund his project, and is accepting preorders at a pop. There’s no final pricing listed at this point, but at 50 bucks for a first-run YouTurn, we were happy to make the pledge. We hope to see O’Neal meet his funding goal and send these to production, but until then, we’ll keep looking both ways and hoping for the best.
