Google reportedly working on wireless home entertainment system to be sold under its own brand

Details are still fairly light at the moment, but The Wall Street Journal is reporting today that Google could be about to make big push into the hardware business. Citing people briefed on the company’s plans, the WSJ says that Google is now developing a home entertainment system that would stream music wirelessly throughout the home (including to web-connected devices and “Google-made speakers”), and be able to be controlled using a smartphone or tablet — making it sound a whole lot like a Sonos competitor. What’s more, unlike current Android and Google TV devices, this system will reportedly be marketed under Google’s own brand. An attempt to really turn it up to eleven, perhaps?

Google Testing Mystery Entertainment System

Google has filed an application with the FCC for a 6-month permission to test a home entertainment system involving WiFi and Bluetooth enabled devices. While I don’t quite understand all the legal-speak, it seems quite clear that the system has to do with Android@Home, which was announced at Google I/O 2011. You can find the application here.
Please explain in the area below why an STA is necessary:
Google is developing an entertainment device that requires testing outside the laboratory environment. The device is in the prototyping phase and will be modified prior to final compliance testing.
Please explain the purpose of operation:
Testing throughput and stability of home WiFi networks using an entertainment device. Testing will include functional testing of all subsystems, including WiFi and Bluetooth radio. Users will connect their device to home WiFi networks and use Bluetooth to connect to other home electronics equipment. This line of testing will reveal real world engineering issues and reliability of networks.
What do you think said “entertainment device(s)” will include? With Android@Home, Android Open Accessory, and Google TV yet to make a huge splash, it could be Google I/O 2012 where physical products, accessories, and readily available apps and games make their first appearances. What do you think Google is dreaming up?
Samsung Epic 4G 2 (SPH-D705) Shows Up In Cellbrite System – Where’s It Headed?

Right before we enter into the weekend, we get a juicy bit of news. Apparently, the Samsung SPH-D705 — otherwise known as the Epic 4G 2 — has popped up in the Cellebrite system indicating the device could be launching sometime in the very near future. Before you get mixed up, keep in mind we’re talking about the sequel to the OG Samsung EPIC 4G that was launched on Sprint and Verizon. Remember that big boned device? The one with the QWERTY keyboard?
Originally, the device was rumored to hit Sprint sometime during Q3 of 2011, but that came and went without neither hide nor hair of the Epic 4G 2. It further received its WiFi certification but still — nothing. We’re still not even sure if the device will actually arrive on Sprint. Once the Epic 4G Touch arrived on the scene, it’s very possible Sprint passed up on the Epic 4G 2 in favor of the more attractive slate form factor. Besides, how confused do you think it would make customers with the “ Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G 2″ and “Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch” both on the same network?
That being said, it’s possible we could see this device launching a smaller regional carrier similar to what happened with the HTC Merge back when it was originally supposed to hit Verizon Wireless, only to show up months later on US Cellular.

MasterCard’s QkR mobile payment system enters trial in Australia

MasterCard is all over the map when it comes to mobile payments. The credit company will partner with anyone, anywhere, anytime if it means getting new customers and making a buck on the deal. Its latest offering is called QkR, an Australian effort with support from the Hoyts chain of movie theaters and Commonwealth Bank. The initial trial run will be at La Premiere cinemas, where customers will be able to order and pay for food and beverages right from their seat with the QkR app. To initiate the transaction a you scan the QR code or tap the NFC tag attached to the arm rest, and a staff member delivers the trough of popcorn and kiddie pool of coke right to your seat. Now all we need is this sort of high-end treatment in American movie theaters. Check out the video after the break to see it in action.

Shogun Bros. Ballista MK-1 Gaming Mouse totes new sniping system, looks like it’ll hit the spot

The latest gaming mouse from Shogun Bros. doesn’t double as a gamepad, but it does carry a heady list of extra features for sharpshooting gamers. These include independent X and Y DPi settings to stabilize targeting, thumb selector for speed shooting, 5,700 DPI accuracy and 11,570 frames per second movement tracking — sidestepping those pesky jumps and stutters when moving that cursor in the midst of a melee. Indicators include X, Y and refresh rate, while you’ll find 11 extra macro keys across the rubberized surface. There are 20 customized DPI settings for any game genre you’d care to mention — oh and a desktop setting, yawn. Expect to shoot the wings off a CGI fly some time in Q2 2012.

OnStar ready to flaunt LTE Skype-enabled system on GM rides

Last year at CES, OnStar wasn’t too shy about teasing its partnership with Verizon that would assist in bringing applications like YouTube, Wikipedia and Skype to your vehicle. At that point, though, it was just an idea. Fast forward to next year’s iteration of the Consumer Electronics Show and that’s turned into a reality. It’s safe to say that Skyping-and-driving wouldn’t be the best of ideas, but fortunately the system will keep you from making that mistake by only running when your car is immobile — so don’t make any plans to call your friends to tell them how fast you’re going. Your kids, or other backseat passengers, won’t be too worried since they’ll be able to take full advantage of all the gimmicks; including the aforementioned, video streaming and the usual Angry Birds frolic. The in-car system is set to be shown on Volt and Cadillac models, and OnStar has said that there’s more deets to be unveiled — you’ll just have to wait until we head to Vegas to find out.
