Did the Galaxy S III just pop up on Samsung’s support site?
Jan 27th

Seriously, we can’t caveat this one enough — there is no way of knowing if this is in fact the Galaxy S III or, if it is, when it might come to market — but, it looks like Samsungs “next big smartphone” just made a cameo on the company’s support pages. Listed as the GT-i9300, the mystery device reared its head over at the Global Download Center of the United Arab Emerites site. If Sammy is to keep with its naming scheme i93XX would be a flagship device — the i90XX line was the Galaxy S, i91XX represents the S2 series, while the i9250 and i9220 are the Nexus and Note respectively. As we warned before though, this could be some mid-range device and Samsung could be changing its naming conventions. Or, perhaps, its yet another variation of an existing model. Still, we’ll take this as a good sign that Seoul squad has something interesting brewing.

Nook Simple Touch gets USB host mode support via hack, plays nice with low-power devices (video)
Jan 23rd

Codemonkeys exhibiting the kindness of strangers? Why, yes, this is such a tale. When XDA Developers member verygreen came across the pleas of one user obsessed with attaching an external USB keyboard to an eReader, he did what any decent hacker would and created a workable solution. Using a loaned Nook Simple Touch, this self-styled Make-A-Wish Hack was able to patch Barnes & Noble’s existing kernel, which already supported USB host mode, and send commands over ADB to enable the connection. It’s not a foolproof workaround, though, as only low-power devices will function without additional juice and even so, at a great cost to the greyscale device’s battery life. Sure, this may not excite you much, but it’s certainly made for one very satisfied forum dweller out there in cyberland. After all, isn’t that what haxxors are for?

Cobra Tag G5 Adds Bluetooth 4.0 LE Support
Jan 10th
Note: device pictured is of previous model.
The folks at Cobra have another product to show off here at CES and it’s simply being called the Cobra Tag G5. We’ve covered this device before and it’s quite simple: when your phone and the tag gets separated from each other one or the other (or both) will sound an alarm letting you know that you’re walking away from either your phone or the tag.

This is useful in a lot of different ways. Most people might put their tag on their keys or purse. If your smartphone is lost or stolen you’ll know it almost right away, and if your purse is lost or stolen you’ll know it almost right away.
This iteration of the device uses Bluetooth 4.0 LE (low energy) in order to minimize impact on battery life. Users must have a phone with Bluetooth 4.0 (not many) so keep that in mind before dropping the you’ll soon have to drop on it in the second quarter of this year.. Read on for full press details.

HTC updates bootloader unlock utility to support latest Android lineup
Dec 29th

It wasn’t long ago that HTC’s bootloader unlock utility hit the masses, thereby righting the company’s silly decision to lock its phones down in the first place. Now, continuing its commitment to mod-lovers and those who appreciate freedom, The House of Chou is announcing that its latest lineup of Android phones can find a similar (and proper) fate. The company has released an updated bootloader unlock tool that supports all Android devices released after September of this year. Naturally, this includes such handsets as the HTC EVO Design 4G, Rezound, Rhyme and Vivid. The company has yet to release an updated list of supported devices, but promises to do so in the coming days. While we’re still not crazy about users losing their rights to a warranty, for the moment, that seems to be the price of freedom.
