Sony Tablet P’s product manager shows off prototypes, tells the clamshell story
Feb 7th

Still baffled by the Tablet P’s existence? Well, Sony’s here to help! Earlier today, our brethren over at Engadget Chinese met up with Takeshi Goto, the head honcho of VAIO and mobile product producing, to learn how the Android clamshell went from several mockups (one of which was made out of a wallet) right after the PDA era to the final product today. Between those two pivotal points on the timeline, Sony explored screen sizes between five to seven inches before settling on 5.5 due to hardware limitation; though the entire device ended up being about the same size as the 7-inch mockup. Later on, the manufacturer hooked up a couple of VAIO UXs to power a Nintendo DS-like dual-screen prototype — that was when Windows and x86 were under consideration, before Sony eventually went with Android on ARM. Intrigued? Hit the link below to take a look at the aforementioned goodies.

LG finally shows a profit from cellphones, record high flat-panel shipments in Q4 earnings
Feb 1st

LG has revealed its earnings statements for the fourth quarter of 2011 and the full year, and it managed to notch an operating profit of 23 billion won (.5 million), boosted by a 10 billion won operating profit in its handset division. That was despite lower sales compared to the previous quarter (17.7 million compared to 21.1 million), with higher sales of its new Optimus LTE and lower sales of less profitable dumbphones. It also had solid results in TVs with an operating profit of 150 billion won and record shipments of 8.8 million units, thanks to demand for its higher end models over the holidays. Check out the slides in the PDF linked below for notes on how LG plans to dominate 2012 with more LTE, 3D and air conditioners, although we’d just recommend moving to Level 5 of the Kobe System.

Samsung Epic 2 shows up on CelleBrite, launching soon?
Jan 30th
There’s no better way to start the week than with a blurry photo and information about a new upcoming Android smartphone. The device in the photo above is supposedly the upcoming Samsung Epic 2, which will be the successor to the original Epic 4G. Our friends over at ACS got their hands on an image which indicates that the device showed up on CelleBrite’s system as the SPH-D705 Epic 2.The model number of the original Epic 4G is SPH-D700, and the Epic 4G Touch is SPH-D710, so this device is probably somewhere in between.
The Epic 2 is rumored to be packing a 4-inch qHD display, 1.2GHz single-core Hummingbird processor, and a 8-megapixel camera. These are not the final specs, so we will hopefully might see some changes before it’s released. ACS is reporting that the device will hit Sprint, but Verge is saying that it may not, because they are considering more high-end devices right now. More on this as it develops.
So who’s planning to get this Samsung device? Any OG Epic 4G owners out there that aren’t impressed with the specs? Drop a comment below!

Samsung Epic 4G 2 (SPH-D705) Shows Up In Cellbrite System – Where’s It Headed?
Jan 28th

Right before we enter into the weekend, we get a juicy bit of news. Apparently, the Samsung SPH-D705 — otherwise known as the Epic 4G 2 — has popped up in the Cellebrite system indicating the device could be launching sometime in the very near future. Before you get mixed up, keep in mind we’re talking about the sequel to the OG Samsung EPIC 4G that was launched on Sprint and Verizon. Remember that big boned device? The one with the QWERTY keyboard?

Originally, the device was rumored to hit Sprint sometime during Q3 of 2011, but that came and went without neither hide nor hair of the Epic 4G 2. It further received its WiFi certification but still — nothing. We’re still not even sure if the device will actually arrive on Sprint. Once the Epic 4G Touch arrived on the scene, it’s very possible Sprint passed up on the Epic 4G 2 in favor of the more attractive slate form factor. Besides, how confused do you think it would make customers with the “ Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G 2″ and “Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch” both on the same network?
That being said, it’s possible we could see this device launching a smaller regional carrier similar to what happened with the HTC Merge back when it was originally supposed to hit Verizon Wireless, only to show up months later on US Cellular.

Samsung Galaxy S III Shows Up On Support Website?
Jan 27th
We had heard that Samsung isn’t planning on introducing the Galaxy S III at Mobile World Congress. That’s why we find it surprising that a GT-I9300 appears on the Global Download Center in the United Emirates. For those playing at home, the I93XX would indicate a flagship device. The i91XX is for the Galaxy S II, while the i92XX represents the Galaxy Nexus and Note. That’s why it strikes us as surprising to see this show up on one of their websites.

This could be a simple placeholder, something that has zero bearing on when it might release. Then again, maybe news of Samsung not announcing the Galaxy S III at MWC was a great head fake.

Opinion: ASUS shows they understand the tablet market with the $250 MeMO 370T
Jan 13th
By now, you hopefully already know about the ASUS MeMO 370T. On paper, the MeMO 370T is a spec’d out 7-inch slate that features nVidia’s powerful Tegra 3 quad-core system on a chip. This tablet screams top-of-the-line, yet ASUS will offer the tablet to consumer for 0. Why would they price this thing so low, you ask?
In short, ASUS simply gets it. They understand that consumers want tablets, perhaps to even replace their laptops, but they don’t want them at laptop prices. Instead, consumers largely see tablets as cooler netbooks, and are looking to spend between 0 and 0 on these devices. Of course, the 0 and up iPad/iPad2 have bucked this tradition, but Apple has a long history of pricing themselves at the very high end of the market (or above), and still selling a multitude of devices to their fanbase.
The biggest reason Android tablet sales haven’t taken off is because they’ve been priced to compete with iPads instead of netbooks. Amazon proved this when they launched the Kindle Fire, the 0 eReader tablet hybrid that in 2 months has sold as many or more units than all previous Android tablets combined. HP’s Touchpad tablets sold out in minutes when they were dropped to 0-150 in HP’s inventory eliminating fire-sale. The 0 Nook Tablet has proven no slouch either, making Barnes and Noble’s nook line one of their most profitable divisions.
In order for tablet makers (including Apple) to compete, they’re going to have to continue to offer tablets for less, a point ASUS has certainly taken to heart with the MeMO 370T. The launch of the MeMO 370T was likely the biggest and best surprise of CES 2012, and we’re happy to see companies starting to offer powerful tablets at incredibly affordable prices. We hope to see this trend continue; in fact, we think it has to continue if Android tablet sales are ever going to take off.
