Verizon roadmap confirms launch date for Droid Bionic, HTC Vigor, Samsung Stratosphere and more
Aug 4th
It looks like Verizon has a serious case of the “leakies”. Somebody inside the company just leaked a supposedly official roadmap of the company’s upcoming devices. The roadmap extends all the way from September up to January of next year. If we’re to believe this leak, Verizon will release a total of 9 new Android devices in that time-frame. Let’s take a look at all of them.
- Droid Bionic — September 8th — We know all about the Droid Bionic at this point. All there’s left to do is wait one more month.
- Samsung Stratosphere — September 8th — Word on the street is that the Stratosphere will replace Verizon’s Fascinate. It will launch with 4G LTE support and Android 2.3.
- Motorola XOOM 4G LTE — September 8th — Nothing to report here. It’s just the Xoom with 4G support.
- Samsung Illusion — September 29th — A 3G device running Android 2.3 most likely aimed at the low to mid-end section of the market.
- HTC Bliss — September 29th — Another Android phone powered by Gingerbread. However, this will one will supposedly be marketed to women.
- HTC Vigor — October 6th — It looks like the HTC Vigor will replace the HTC Thunderbolt.
- LG Revolution 2 — October 20th — You guessed it! This one will replace the LG Revolution.
- Samsung Galaxy Tab P8 — November — A 4G LTE tablet that could very well be the Galaxy Tab 8.9.
- Samsung Plato — January — This is one quite interesting. The device was, for some reason, pushed bad to January. Last time I checked, Ice Cream Sandwich will be released this Christmas. So the Plato will be either one of the first Android devices to run ICS or it will be outdated at launch. Humongous difference between the two.
There you have it. A total of nine Android devices, all coming out over the next few months. I fear my wallet won’t make it through this Christmas’ shopping season.

Canalys: Android rules the smartphone world, Samsung could’ve done better
Aug 2nd

Thought Android was killing it in the US? Try the rest of planet Earth, bud. The latest from our friends at Canalys has Google’s mobile OS on 48 percent of smartphones worldwide, or nearly one out of every two sold. Mountain View’s stratospheric rise came at someone’s expense, and it looks like Nokia’s the loser here folks, which corroborates the data from last week’s IDC report. Espoo’s foibles are troublesome in a market that grew 73 percent year over year, especially when Samsung shipped 421 percent more handsets than it did a year ago. As a result, the Korean company has surpassed Nokia in smartphone marketshare, just like its rival in Cupertino. Despite the rampant growth, the research firm suspects Sammy could have done better, noting that it had failed to capitalize on Nokia’s “weakened state around the world” with its “global scale and channel reach.” We’ll see if Samsung takes Canalys’ constructive criticism to heart in Q3, but while you wait, you can read the full report after the jump.

Samsung will release Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia despite Apple complaint
Aug 2nd

Samsung has put out a distinctly unafraid-looking statement declaring that a “Galaxy Tab 10.1 for the Australian market will be released in the near future,” despite Apple’s attempt to halt sales through the Aussie Federal Court. It explains that Apple’s underlying patent complaints only relate to the US variant of the tablet, which Samsung had no plans to sell Down Under anyway. In a particularly emboldened finale, the missive adds that “Samsung will continue to actively defend and protect our intellectual property.”
