Editorial: Engadget on the Samsung Galaxy S III
May 8th

Was it everything you imagined? The Galaxy S III didn’t really slap us silly with hardware spectacle or a particularly brave design and instead plowed into software additions and contextual features. There was plenty to chew over and plenty of discussion followed its big reveal, spilling out over the last few days — this was a big launch for not only Samsung but Android itself. We’ve got the six editors who spent time with the device to offer up their own thoughts on this new Android Olympian.

Samsung, Qualcomm start up Alliance for Wireless Power to take on Qi
May 8th

Wireless power has until now been closely associated with the Wireless Power Consortium’s Qi standard. There’s now a second proposed common ground in the Alliance for Wireless Power, or A4WP. Samsung and Qualcomm, along with some help from Powermat, SK Telecom, Ever Win Industries, Gill Industries and Peiker Acustic, are making an alternative that allows for “spatial freedom” between your gadget and the charging source, although whether or not that’s better than the 1.6-inch distance of the updated Qi spec is left to the imagination. The strategy doesn’t just let your device avoid French kissing the charger: it lets you power up through a material besides a metal plate, and it reduces the cost by eliminating repeaters. A4WP should power everything from low-power headsets through to smartphones and tablets, although with partnership talk just getting started at CTIA Wireless 2012, we wouldn’t hold off on buying wired-power gadgets in the near future.

Samsung takes the Note to the streets – Have you seen one of these around?
May 6th

AT&T and Samsung have really gone all out with the Samsung Galaxy Note. Advertisements are everywhere, but apparently they feel like that isn’t enough, and they have taken it to the streets. Google+ user Amar Rajvanshi has recently posted a few pictures of some Samsung representatives just going around the streets showing off the device.
The pictures were taken at South st. in Philadelphia. They are riding around in a truck that has Samsung ads posted all over it. I was a bit confused by the fact that the cars in that street were not circulating, and seem to all just be parked. Maybe a special street or some sort of event?
Either way, it was just interesting to see that Samsung has decided to do brick & mortar advertising. Hey, maybe a few of the people that check it out will actually buy it! I have never seen anything like this in person. Have you guys ran into any of these trucks around?

Visualized: Apple and Samsung occupy the 99 percent… of phone profits
May 4th

Financial maven and maker of beautiful graphs Horace Deidu has found that between the top eight mobile phone vendors, Apple and Samsung share 99 percent of the total spoils. Of RIM, LG, Sony (Ericsson), Motorola, Nokia and HTC, only the latter made a profit — claiming that left over one percent. The remaining six all recorded losses for the quarter, Mr. Deidu adding that several of those companies are carrying feature phone businesses that they should shed before they become an albatross around their neck.

Samsung Galaxy S III defeats iPhone 4S in GPU benchmarks
May 4th
We knew the Exynos 4 Quad chip inside the Samsung Galaxy S III was fast, and now we have the benchmarks to back it up. Brian Klug from Anandtech ran a series of performance benchmarks on the Galaxy S III and found it had the fastest graphics performance of any mobile device he had tested.
These results are impressive, but keep in mind the US version of the Galaxy S III with LTE will likely have a different processor. Most insiders believe it could feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 processor, as seen in the AT&T HTC One X, but we are still waiting on the official specs from Samsung.
Make sure you hit up the source link for additional performance results.
