Moneto’s $30 Android mobile payment kit goes on sale, brings contactless payments to six Samsungs
Feb 21st

Not everyone’s smartphone has NFC, and of those that do, an even smaller subset have official Google Wallet support. It would seem Mountain View’s complacency is Moneto’s gain, as the outfit’s recently put up for sale its NFC-enabled microSD card — enabling plebes everywhere sans contactless circuitry to sashay their way into mobile payment heaven. That card is also stuffed with 1GB of storage for your exploits and those plunking down three Hamiltons are also privy to a credit thrown in. There’s one caveat, however, as per its website the service currently only works on variants of the Galaxy S (including carrier permutations like the Vibrant, Fascinate and Galaxy S 4G). Support for an additional forty devices is inbound but before committing, we’d peep the latest compatibility info from the horse’s mouth in the more coverage link we’ve included below.

MasterCard’s QkR mobile payment system enters trial in Australia
Jan 27th

MasterCard is all over the map when it comes to mobile payments. The credit company will partner with anyone, anywhere, anytime if it means getting new customers and making a buck on the deal. Its latest offering is called QkR, an Australian effort with support from the Hoyts chain of movie theaters and Commonwealth Bank. The initial trial run will be at La Premiere cinemas, where customers will be able to order and pay for food and beverages right from their seat with the QkR app. To initiate the transaction a you scan the QR code or tap the NFC tag attached to the arm rest, and a staff member delivers the trough of popcorn and kiddie pool of coke right to your seat. Now all we need is this sort of high-end treatment in American movie theaters. Check out the video after the break to see it in action.

Visa aims at developing countries with new international prepaid mobile payment service
Nov 17th

Shortly after announcing its new digital wallet service V.me for developed markets, Visa also made a presence at Mobile Asia Congress in Hong Kong to promote its new prepaid mobile money platform aimed at the under-banked and the unbanked consumers. By utilizing its recently-acquired Fundamo (which currently has more than 10 million mobile payment subscribers), Visa aims to leverage on the vast number of mobile phone users in developing countries — many of whom are already using local but carrier-bound mobile payment systems — in order to offer a globally interoperable mobile payment network.
This overlaying platform is said to be more secure, much cheaper and more convenient than the likes of Western Union, especially when you can simply make mobile-to-mobile payments when sending money across countries. Nigeria and Uganda will be the first nations to get a taste of this early next year courtesy of telecommunications provider MTN Group, and eventually more developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America will join the list. Full press release after the break.

Google expected to announce a mobile payment service this Thursday, our wallets hide in fear
May 24th
Google will unveil a new mobile payment service this Thursday, according to Bloomberg. El Goog plans to announce a new service that will allow people to use their NFC-enabled devices to pay for merchandise instead of using a credit card or cash. At first, the service will be available only for Sprint’s Nexus S 4G, but hopefully future NFC-packing phones will be able to join in as well.
Google is partnering with a handful of companies to make this possible. The web giant will be using hardware and software from VeriFone and ViVOtech, said Bloomberg. With the help of these companies, Google will roll out this service to five cities across the nation — we hope they’ll expand nationwide later on. Those cities are, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington, D.C.
It’s obvious that Google is very serious about mobile payments. One of the technologies behind mobile payments is NFC, and as we saw at Google I/O, the company is putting a lot of money and effort behind it. Like we said before, you can expect Ice Cream Sandwich to be jam-packed with NFC-related features.
We’ll bring you all the goodies as they’re revealed this Thursday, but if you want to watch the event live, it looks you’ll be able to do that right from Google’s official YouTube account. What do you guys want to see come out of this event? Are you ready to use your phone as your credit card? Let us know in the comments.
