Unnamed Samsung exec says quad-core Exynos inside Galaxy S III, LTE on-chip
Mar 19th

An unnamed Samsung exec hinted to the Korea Times that its upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S III, will include a next-gen quad-core Exynos chip that will incorporate LTE and WCDMA radios. Of course, such a revelation shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise since both its predecessors were built around home grown silicon… at least originally. According to the source, Sammy is trying to become more self reliant and distance itself from Qualcomm which has provided single-chip solutions for a number of the manufacturer’s high-end handsets. The new AP appears to be the 32nm slab of silicon we heard about before MWC, which is sporting four A9 cores and not the more powerful A15. The executive said the development of the all-in-one chip is complete and its simply a matter of sticking them inside smartphones. Now, when exactly we can hope to see such a device hit the market is still a bit of a mystery.

New Samsung Galaxy trademarks hint at upcoming device names
Mar 17th

I just swung by the US Patent and Trademarks office, as I am often wont to do, and found a few new Samsung filings that might be fun to watch. These are new since the last time I checked and, from what I can gather, have not been tied to anything devices yet.
Obviously it’s unclear exactly what these trademark applications will ultimately lead to, especially given Samsung’s broad range of products. Will these be flagship devices to be announced at CTIA in May or could these just be alternate versions of existing models that end up on carriers such as Cricket, MetroPCS, and Boost Mobile? The Galaxy Pocket sounds like a similar product recently announced for international crowds. Might this dimnuitive smartphone be arriving stateside or is it a Samsung Android-based camera?
Or could these actually be carrier-branded versions of the Galaxy S III just hanging around?
As always, if you have anything to add here, I would love to hear it.

Galaxy S III to be unveiled May 22nd at Samsung Unpacked event in London?
Mar 17th
If this is another fake, it’s a damn good one. Today a reddit user uploaded a supposed press image of the Galaxy S III which hints at an unveiling on May 22nd at a Samsung Unpacked event in London.
Samsung previously said the successor to the Galaxy S II would be unveiled at “separate Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year, closer to commercial availability of the product.” The latest rumored release date is sometime in June, so this leak falls into those plans.
On the leaked image we can see the name of a PR firm called Weber Shandwick. A quick search through my Gmail archives shows they have done work for Samsung in the past, including their press conference at CES 2010.
Other details revealed in the photo include a dedicated camera button (yes!), the return of the single home button, a front speaker grill, and an edge-to-edge screen.
Rumors had suggested that Samsung might announce the Galaxy S III in the United States, but they did hold the Galaxy Nexus unveiling in Hong Kong, so I guess anything is possible, including London.
I’m not sure about the significance of the May 22nd date, but it does fall between the CTIA Wireless show in early May and Google IO in late June. We are expecting a lot of new smartphone announcements at CTIA, so I think it would be kind of genius for Samsung to skip another big trade show and overshadow everyone a couple weeks later.
As of right now the Samsung Unpacked site is offline, but keep an eye on it because we could see the first teaser soon.
Maybe we are all getting trolled again, but this leak looks pretty genuine to me. What do you think?
Test photo from Galaxy S III hints at 8 megapixel camera?
Mar 16th
Want to see a test photo from the Samsung Galaxy S III? We are not expecting the device until June, but rumors suggest the design has been finalized and now recent photos seem to confirm it’s currently being tested by Samsung employees.
German blog AllAboutSamsung spotted a picture that was uploaded to Picasa from a device with the model number GT-I9300. Recent speculation has suggested that GT-I9300 will become the model number of the Galaxy S III, so these could be the first photos from the highly anticipated device.
So what can we learn from the photo? It appears to be taken by a Samsung employee located in New York City. We can see a Samsung laptop, Samsung tablet, Samsung phone, and a row of Samsung chargers located in the picture. The resolution of the picture is 3264 × 2448, which suggest an 8.1 megapixel camera.
The current Galaxy S II also features an 8 megapixel camera, but we know that megapixel count is not that important anymore when talking about picture quality. Keep in mind that this photo might have been snapped with a lower resolution, and the Galaxy S III could still feature a 12 megapixel camera like rumored.
Whoever uploaded the photo to Picasa already took it down, which could suggest this is real and got online by accident. We only have the lower resolution image below to go by, so don’t let this single photo be the judge of the final camera quality. Some sites have already pointed out that this photo was captured with an HDR effect, which could explain the blurriness.
Overall this isn’t much to get excited about, but the Galaxy S III is the hottest upcoming phone and we will devour any bit that gets tossed our way. Check out the picture below and let us know what you think about it.

Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 3.6 hands-on (video)
Mar 15th

If you were paying very close attention during Samsung’s IFA announcements last year, you may have caught wind of a 3.6-inch PMP, fittingly called the Galaxy S WiFi 3.6. Now, Samsung has confirmed that this elusive entry-level Gingerbread handheld will finally be making its way to North America, with a 3.6-inch 800 x 480-pixel display and 1GHz Hummingbird processor in tow. There’s no question that this isn’t going to be a must-have gadget for power users, but for children and those new to Android or portable media players, the 3.6 will suit just fine. It’s still a capable device, though on a more modest scale than pricier models — there’s a rear-facing 2-megapixel camera with a VGA snapper up front, a 1500mAh removable battery, a microSD slot for memory expansion, micro-USB and headphone ports on the bottom, and a power button and volume rocker on the side.
We had a chance to go hands-on with the 3.6 ahead of its U.S. launch during a visit to Samsung HQ in South Korea. The first thing we noticed is its size — the compact design and light weight make single-handed operation quite feasible, even for those with smaller hands. The relatively high-res display (given the size) is of the LCD variety, as with other Galaxy Players, though with the same amount of screen real estate as larger devices, you should have no problem using the PMP for occasional email and basic web-browsing. Surprisingly, we also didn’t have any issue using the keyboard, even in portrait mode with fairly stocky fingers. Navigation was noticeably sluggish compared to higher-end Samsung Galaxy devices, but not out of the ordinary for a mid-tier gadget. We wouldn’t necessarily recommend purchasing the Galaxy S WiFi 3.6 if your everyday device has a large, gorgeous AMOLED display and plenty of processing power under the hood, but if you’re looking for a PMP to compliment your prepaid feature phone, this budget offering should fit the bill. We’re still awaiting confirmation of U.S. pricing and availability, though it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect it to land within the 0-200 range. Jump past the break for our video hands-on.
