MasterCard’s QkR mobile payment system enters trial in Australia
Jan 27th

MasterCard is all over the map when it comes to mobile payments. The credit company will partner with anyone, anywhere, anytime if it means getting new customers and making a buck on the deal. Its latest offering is called QkR, an Australian effort with support from the Hoyts chain of movie theaters and Commonwealth Bank. The initial trial run will be at La Premiere cinemas, where customers will be able to order and pay for food and beverages right from their seat with the QkR app. To initiate the transaction a you scan the QR code or tap the NFC tag attached to the arm rest, and a staff member delivers the trough of popcorn and kiddie pool of coke right to your seat. Now all we need is this sort of high-end treatment in American movie theaters. Check out the video after the break to see it in action.

Rdio gets rechristened ‘Oi Rdio’ while vacationing in Brazil, has plans to visit Germany and Australia
Nov 2nd

Are you a resident of Brazil and love streaming music? Have a seat, as Rdio’s packed its bags and is headed for a little séjour on the South American continent. Launching later this week, the service will be functionally similar to its US and Canadian counterparts, except it’ll lose gratis ad-free streaming and get a name change to “Oi Rdio.” That joint word-mark is the result of a partnership with Brazil’s largest telco, Oi, which should give the service headway with the former’s 70+ million subscribers. But it’s just an awareness ploy, as non-Oi subscribers can still partake in all the fun. Unlimited monthly access to the 12 million tunes on offer starts at $R8.99 (about ) for web, or $R14.90 (about .50) for those seeking offline-capable admittance on their mobiles. It’s all part of an international expansion, as the service plans to visit Australia and Germany in early 2012. Spotify’s passport is plumper, but hey — you gotta start somewhere.

Samsung offers Apple a deal to allow Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales in Australia
Sep 30th

Could Apple and Samsung’s Australian patent battle be nearing an end? We’re not sure yet, but things are looking slightly rosier, now that Sammy has approached its rival with a proposed compromise. As the Wall Street Journal reports, Samsung offered Apple a deal today that would allow its Galaxy Tab 10.1 to hit the Australian market as early as next week. Justice Annabelle Bennett pointed out that the agreement wouldn’t allow Samsung to receive a final ruling on the dispute, but attorney David Catterns explained that it would at least allow the manufacturer to sell its slate ahead of this year’s holiday shopping rush. Less clear, however, is what Apple would stand to gain from any compromise. The company’s lawyer, Stephen Burley, acknowledged that “[Samsung's] inconvenience would be diminished and we would be comforted” by an agreement, though the details behind Samsung’s offer remain unclear, and Burley declined to elaborate upon Apple’s stance after today’s hearing. As always, we’ll keep you up to date with the latest.

Samsung will release Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia despite Apple complaint
Aug 2nd

Samsung has put out a distinctly unafraid-looking statement declaring that a “Galaxy Tab 10.1 for the Australian market will be released in the near future,” despite Apple’s attempt to halt sales through the Aussie Federal Court. It explains that Apple’s underlying patent complaints only relate to the US variant of the tablet, which Samsung had no plans to sell Down Under anyway. In a particularly emboldened finale, the missive adds that “Samsung will continue to actively defend and protect our intellectual property.”
